For six days, starting Saturday 16th February and ending Thursday 21st February, a major line closure between Byker and North Shields is in place. To allow for track and bridge replacement work, a line closure has had to be put in place in the affected areas and a frequent bus replacement service is being operated by Go North East on behalf of Nexus. This work is the last in a series of major line closures to replace 30-year-old Metro tracks and track beds as part of the £385m Metro: all change modernisation programme. In total Nexus has invested more than £150m modernising Metro since April 2010, with the programme including major infrastructure works, new smart ticket systems and the refurbishment of trains and stations. It was recently announced by The Department for Transport that it has awarded Nexus, the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive, a total of £93m which is the maximum possible funding under the 2010 Funding Agreement for renewing and upgrading the Tyne and Wear Metro for the next three years. This funding will allow Nexus to create about 60 new jobs to deliver projects within its Metro: all change modernisation programme – as well as sustaining hundreds more among engineering and transport contractors. These new jobs will be well-valued in the North East, for the current UK economy has been weak in recent years following the late 2000s recession with growth largely flat since 2010, and many people being made redundant in their careers following the administration of the following companies: Republic, Blockbuster UK, HMV, Jessops, Comet, JJB Sports, Game, Peacocks and Clinton Cards.
