Overweight Cartoon Panda Fighter Easily Defeats Armed Natalie Portman
Well, at the box office this weekend, DreamWorks Animation was made terribly rationalized in their belief that they need to make at least six films about an overweight, ursine martial artist. Kung Fu Panda 3 easily took the top spot, bringing in $41 million to set a new opening record in the category of animated films in January (this quite specific record was previously owned by 2014’s The Nut Job, if you can remember that one).
Meanwhile, Chris Pine’s Coast Guard rescue film, The Finest Hours, managed fourth place and, in a reasonably solid sign for humanity, Marlon Wayans’ feature-length Fifty Shades of Grey joke barely made it into the top ten with $6.2 million.
The real loser of the weekend, though? Jane Got a Gun. Quietly released in a surprisingly large number of theaters (1,200), Natalie Portman’s long-troubled production made only $803k, falling well short of the high expectations set by Steven Tyler’s wailing vocals on the 1989 Aerosmith hit Janie’s Got a Gun.
